Despite running outdoor play activity sessions for families I can still find it hard to get my own little out and about enjoying nature. So, we have put together a list of some of the places you can go get that important does of nature.
Cheltenham offers a range of beautiful outdoor spaces for families to explore, from scenic woodlands and panoramic hilltops to peaceful parks and lakes. Whether hiking (or going on a bear hunt), family picnicking, or enjoying a stroll, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Nestled just outside Cheltenham, Lineover Woods offers a peaceful retreat for families wanting to connect with nature. With a variety of walking trails through ancient woodland, it’s a perfect place to explore, breathe in the fresh air, and spot wildlife. Children will love the adventure of walking along the winding paths, spotting squirrels, and perhaps catching a glimpse of a deer. The woods are also home to a lovely array of wildflowers in the spring, making it a beautiful place to visit year-round. The red cedar trees are simply stunning, it is worth visiting just for these.
The woodland is maintained by the Woodland Trust with a car park. It is also only a stones throw away from Dunkertons, you can enjoy a warm drink and a treart afterwards.
Just a short drive from Cheltenham, Crickley Hill is an exceptional spot for families to enjoy some of the best views of the Cotswolds. The site offers stunning views of the Cotswolds and offers well-marked trails that are perfect for a family hike. Along the way, families can enjoy the breathtaking woodland scenery, spot wild deer and more. You can take in the history of the area too, including the remnants of an ancient hill fort. Crickley Hill is a wonderful place for a family trip out, to fill up a morning or afternoon when you just need to get your little ones out the house.
Managed by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust there is a substantial car park and lovely cafe with space to sit inside and out. You'll love the hot soup, tasty pasties, delicious cakes and amazing ice cream. All this makes Crikey Hill a great spot for the family all year round. And the views are incredible!
*Please be aware there are some steep hills not suitible for wobbly little ones.
Keep hold of your hats because it can pretty windy at the highest point in the cotswolds, Cleeve Hill. It is totally worth the breeze, however, with big open rolling hills to explore. The scenery there is epic and if your little ones love to ride their bikes in the heart of nature, this is the place.
If you are a family who loves a good walk with rewarding views, Cleeve Hill is a must-visit. As the highest point in the Cotswolds, it offers panoramic views of Cheltenham and beyond. The vast open space is perfect for children to run free, fly kites, or simply enjoy the fresh air. Wildlife lovers will also appreciate the variety of birds and wildflowers found in this unique landscape. Whether you take a short walk or embark on a longer hike, Cleeve Hill provides a memorable outdoor adventure with those signature Costwolds rolling hills.
Top Tip: Take a flask and packed lunch as there no cafe or shops.
Leckhampton Hill is a fantastic place for a family hike, offering stunning views and fascinating natural features. The most famous of these is the Devil’s Chimney, a curious limestone rock formation standing tall against the landscape.
Our children loved hearing the legends surrounding its name, and the area is full of opportunities for adventure. With well-marked trails, picnic spots, and breathtaking scenery, Leckhampton Hill is an excellent choice for an active day out in nature.
If your child is more advanced with their bike skills this is a top spot for some off road cycling. There are a range of challenges for them to take to suit different abilities. All you need is Cotswolds hills, a helmet and let gravity do the work for a wild ride!
Top Tip: Make sure you pack your wellies. It can get muddy!
Just passed our lovely home at Lineover, tucked away near Dowdeswell Reservoir, this woodland is a fantastic spot for a peaceful, but sometimes muddy, family walk. The trails meander through a beautiful mix of trees, with plenty of opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife.
The reservoir itself adds to the scenic charm, we often enjoy a gentle stroll along the water’s edge. Please be careful as some areas around the water are steep. Dowdeswell Woods is particularly magical in autumn, when the trees burst into shades of red and gold.
Enjoy Cheltenham’s Natural Beauty
Each of these wonderful natural spaces in and around Cheltenham offers a unique opportunity for families to explore, relax, and reconnect with nature. Whether you're taking a gentle stroll through the woods, enjoying a lakeside picnic, or soaking in a stunning view, there's always something to enjoy in the great outdoors.
